Keli the fashion blogger wearing a trendy outfit in a style collage |
I'm about to combine two of my favourite topics: astrology and fashion. Did you know that if you wanted to come across as effortlessly magnetic, pulling people to you like moths to a flame, just through a simple change of clothes (your outfit is your energy, as I say)... all you need to do is dress like the star sign in the ascendant part of your birth chart. It's also called a rising sign (different from your sun sign). If you're not sure how to find your rising sign, it's super simple to just type your birth details into the
Cafe Astrology Rising Sign Calculator. After that, just Google some style mood boards for the rising sign the calculator gives you. The mood boards will give you ideas of patterns, colours, materials, styles and cuts that will alter the way people perceive you. I can confirm it works.
The Gemini rising in me came out to play today. On most days my personal style falls into the typically 'preppy elegant' category. Neutral and pastel shades, blazers, clean cuts, simple jewelry. Basic staples but elevated.
I'm a Cancer sun, you see, so a lot about me is soft, gentle, and unobtrusive. I like make up that is barely there, clothing that is neat and ethereal. The day I heard I needed to dress like my rising sign to embody my best most-fashionable self, I had a heart attack. Not because there's anything wrong with Geminis - they're playful, fun, confident, bold - but because the style advice typically out there for Gemini is not tailored for adult women with the kind of career I, and many others, have - I'm the founder and current CEO of a professional publishing house, and a well-reputed author.
Typical style advice out there for Gemini rising is about wearing bold prints (like animal prints), wild colours, and bright make up shades. Google any mood board for Gemini rising style and you'll see teenage-looking outfits that combine youth, trend, and progressiveness. But as a businesswoman and professional artist who couldn't be taken seriously wearing bright blue eyeshadow over a leopard skin crop top, with pigtails in my hair... here's how I adapt those elements into my adult need for some elegance.
Here are my style tips for the elegant adult Gemini rising woman.
1. Minimalistic make-up
A lot of sources will say not to be afraid to use bright colours in the eye makeup. What they're aiming for is to embrace the youthfulness of Gemini rising. You can do this another way, in my opinion.
Keeping a fresh, clean face looks like the ultimate form of youth.
Allow yourself to look young again, not by doing more to actively force the appearance, but by scaling back to your natural self before the compulsive adult need to use products took over.
In the image above, this was the extent of my make up:
- a clean, moisturized face with NO FOUNDATION (use something light, like a skin tint, if you must. The appearance of thick foundation will shatter that illusion or youth.)
- simply brushed my eyebrows with a small brow brush (no gels or lamination as this takes away from the natural rawness of youth.)
- liquid liner, mascara, and pencil liner, with NO EYESHADOW (if you look up close, you'll see the only creativity was a gentle double wing to add in that element of play)
- a barely there pink lip, and then I used the same lip colour on my cheek to make it look like it was all my natural complexion
And that's it! The minimal, very natural face gave me greater youth than any amount of vivid shadow pallet. And this way, I'm still representing myself professionally in front of clients while still honoring my Gemini rising style.
2. Use boldness as an accessory, not a base
I'm still hung up on all the animal prints and rainbow shades Gemini rising is told to wear. In fact, this was my greatest resistance to dressing like my rising sign. I don't want to rock geometrics and wildlife skin and colour blocks. It's just not for me. And unfortunately not for my clients either. But here's how I still honor my Gemini rising need for creativity in my style: by incorporating bold elements as subtle accents to enhance my basic look.
In the image above, here are the small bold accents that take my monochrome look to full blown Gemini rising style:
- the bold geometric print on the handle of a simple handbag
- wearing two statement rings on the same hand
- small double wings on an otherwise plain face
- a double layered necklace
All these little things incorporate the idea of 'bold statement' without letting the concept take over me.
3. Take formal pieces and use them in creative ways
As adult women, we still need to look formal and professional in front of certain people. We can't do the crop tops and graphic tees that Gemini rising girls are told to wear. That won't do in our daily settings. The solution, to add in that Gemini creativity, is to wear the formal wear because we have to and there's no escaping that. But just style it creatively.
In the image above I did the following:
- kept it monochrome for professionalism
- took a formal pinstripe waistcoat and put it over shorts instead of trousers
- put formal black stockings under the shorts to create the illusion of a work outfit with a twist
I know, I know! The cut of the waistcoat is horrible in the picture. It fits well all along my torso then suddenly loses shape over my bust. But the concept still applies.
4. Allow your hair to be itself
Gemini rising women have a wildness about their style. They can't be held down, pinned down and categorized. In fact, Gemini rising women are known for their versatility, adaptability, androgyny, and inability to be boxed.
The easiest way to express this wildness and freedom is by working with your hair and what it wants to do, rather than trying to tame it into a conventional style.
In the above image, I worked with my hair in the following way:
- it set naturally wavy after I brushed it so I didn't force it to be straightened
- it set a little bushy, so I didn't stuff it into a bun or pony where it wouldn't feel comfortable. My hair wanted to be a little big today and I let it be
- just to keep it elegant, because I still need to be presentable, I used 2 French hair combs to keep it out of my face
You've lived with your own hair forever. You'll know what it likes to do best, and find a way to just simply elevate that.
5. Wear power colours
Admittedly, I'm not doing it in the above image, but Gemini rising women look their best in the following colours:
- yellow
- gold
- mint or sage
That's certainly not to say you can't wear other colours - I'm not doing it in the image, but if you need a little pointer, those are your go-to shades.
I bought a scarf today... my first time owning a satin scarf. I bought it in a variation of brown, gold, and yellow. I can't wait to style it! Hmmm, will I style it in Cancer sun fashion or Gemini rising? I guess we'll have to see...
