BOOK REVIEW: MANACLED - SENLINYU
On the Wednesday a friend took me to the movies. I chose to watch Toy Story 5, and it was a genuine joy to watch a kids movie again. Then we shopped for a travel bag and warm sweater for a trip I'd be taking the next day. Lunch too, of course. On the Thursday it was my trip to Joburg. There, I had lunch with a friend, a chic Starbucks run, then off to a book launch for one of my clients. I woke up in 3 degree weather, with only an outfit made for sunny Durban since I was heading home. Back in Durban, now Friday and the actual birthday, I was ushered straight from the airport to brunch overlooking the ocean. There were plans to gallivant a little more, but a good nap, and the night in my own bed, was in order for me so I left my birthday a little early. The next afternoon I headed to my dad's where he took me to a 3 course dinner, and birthday shopping. And still, it wasn't over yet. The next morning my mum took me to a pedi, facial, and full body massage. Then my favourite simple treat - a cheeseburger and ice coffee from MacDonald's. I thoroughly enjoyed being whisked around by everyone to all the fun activities. And I equally enjoyed those quiet moments - on the plane, while getting ready for a nap, resetting my energy at home before the next occassion - where I got to open the book I was reading.
Here's my review of it.

OVERVIEW
This story is a fan-written alternate ending to Harry Potter, overriding books 6 and 7, while the events of books 1-5 remain intact.
Lord Voldemort ended up winning the war - which lasted years - and now rules the wizarding world with his ranks of death eaters. Everyone that participated in the resistance was taken prisoner. Now, with the pureblood magical population severely depleted after the fighting, Voldemort implements a repopulation program. Prisoners are assigned to pureblood families to birth more magical children. Hermione is assigned to Draco, bound by a set of manacles that strip her of her magic.
The story turns into a deep, devastating, tragic romance.
PROBLEM POINTS
Two things can be true at once - I devoured every sentence of this book, and still recognize that the premise on which it starts is disturbingly problematic.
This is, of course, a dark romance where prisoner and captor grow to love each other. However, the relationship they build is ultimately founded on coercion. Meaningful consent to the relationship and, especially, its intimacy cannot exist because Hermione, as a woman broken by years of war and imprisonment, is not in a mental state for considered consent. She is also enslaved by Draco, therefore there is a great power imbalance that affects what she can reasonably say yes and no to. The same is potentially true for Draco, who was forced into the relationship by his master, Lord Voldemort, with the threat of death, after years of fighting a year that was also traumatic to his own mental being.
The book contains repeated violence, including sexual violence. Rape, torture, forced pregnancy, imprisonment, genocide. I get it - this is a highly realistic war story. But all of this is used as an almost aesthetic backdrop of the romance; for example, Hermione being used as a broodmare becomes the premise under which Hermione and Draco fall in love.
There is also the humanizing of the villain, which has become a popular story trope in dark romance. Draco, in this story, has continued his death eater journey in Voldemort's ranks and has participated actively in the culling of muggle borns, but is romanticized for being an ice king to everyone except Hermione.
Also, keep in mind that this is fanfiction. There was no full publishing process involved, including editors, so there are issues with punctuation, grammar, typos.
PLUS POINTS
With it being said that this book should be read with discernment, it's a brilliant piece of fanfiction. I always looked forward to getting back to it in the midst of everything going on in my life. As a publisher, not just an author myself, I am generally averse to books that are unnecessarily long. In the course of work I must always ask myself, "Does this book contain anything that doesn't really need to be there. that's making it this long?" This is the one book where I've said every page of it deserved to be read. Over 370,000 words and not one was a waste. This book was worth every page.
The book clearly contained proper story planning and structure. Unlike a horde of dark romance out there, this isn't an endless string of questionable romantic interactions, without substance to it. There is a tightly pulled together plot, explored in a very controlled way. The audience is given information at just the right places, resulting in some surprises and a sense - by the end of it all - that the author had planned for everything to fall together precisely.
The level of world building and detail is breathtaking. And yes, I do acknowledge that a good part of the groundwork was done by the original author of the Harry Potter series. But unlike regular fanfiction, which just runs with what exists, SenLinYu carefully constructed her own setting of a war-torn world, every plot point that contributed to the surprise twists, the psychological profiles of characters that had lived through war, and the motives of each person.
On the note of a highly detailed world at war, this was possibly the author's strongest part of the writing. The story is not merely a romance with war as the background - this is, in and of itself, a tragic war story. A romance that struggles to thrive simply forms part of the natural fabric of this life. The author perfectly captured the reality of war and its toll on each character; even those on the winning side do not walk away perfectly intact.
I would go as far as saying that this book would have been the more realistic ending to Harry Potter. Truly, the original story seems far too romanticized for the battle they were fighting, when compared to this war epic.
And finally, possibly my favourite thing about the book - this story is the redemption arc Draco never got in Harry Potter. It's by no means a clean redemption. Draco is still very much a character who contributed devastatingly to the propagation of a war and lives permanently with the consequences of it. But the character is given the opportunity to recognize and converse around it, unlike the slightly halfway-there ending Draco got in the original story.
CONCLUSION
SenLinYu has today become lore in the publishing and reader circuits. Manacled became one of the most popular internet fanfictions ever written, surpassing many published books. The book gained so much traction that the author was offered a full deal by a publisher. Of course, it couldn't be published as is because Harry Potter is the intellectual property of J.K Rowling. SenLinYu had to rework the story into an original piece, building her own magical world from scratch, with unique characters. The brand new book underwent a complete publishing process, and is called Alchemized. The story follows an alchemist named Helena, who becomes the prisoner of a necromancer in a post-war world. It, too, is a mammoth of a book at over 1000 pages.
I enjoyed Manacled so much that I wanted to restart it the second I finished the last sentence. Thankfully, there is still Alchemized for me to enjoy anew.
